This is such a horrible tragedy. Its almost as bad as a guy going into a school and shooting up people. It will be interesting to see how he ever made it into the police department. I just woke up but I'm going to go watch CNN to see if they have more on this story.
By ROBERT IMRIE, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago

CRANDON, Wis. - The residents of a remote northern Wisconsin community struggled to understand Monday how a sheriff's deputy who killed six young people and critically wounded another could have become a law enforcement officer.

Tyler Peterson, 20, was shot to death after opening fire early Sunday on a group of students and recent graduates who had gathered for pizza and movies during their high school's homecoming weekend. Peterson was off-duty from his full-time job as a Forest County deputy sheriff; he also was a part-time Crandon police officer.

David Franz, 36, who lives with his wife two houses from the duplex where the shooting occurred, said it was hard to accept that someone in law enforcement was the gunman.

"The first statement we said to each other was, how did he get through the system?" Franz said. "How do they know somebody's background, especially that young? It is disturbing, to say the least."

Sheriff Keith Van Cleve said he would meet with state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen on Monday morning to discuss the case.

Crandon Police Chief John Dennee said the investigation would be handled by the state Department of Criminal Investigation because the suspect was a deputy and officer.

Peterson was killed Sunday afternoon, eight miles north of Crandon in the rural town of Argonne, Dennee said.

Crandon mayor Gary Bradley said Sunday that a sniper killed the suspect, but Van Cleve would not confirm that officers shot him.

The gunman's motive was unclear, but the mother of a 14-year-old victim said the suspect may have been a jealous boyfriend.

"I'm waiting for somebody to wake me up right now. This is a bad, bad dream," said Jenny Stahl, whose daughter, Lindsey Stahl, was the youngest victim. "All I heard it was a jealous boyfriend and he went berserk. He took them all out."

Dennee declined comment on whether Peterson had a romantic relationship with any of the victims.

The lone survivor of the shooting, a male, remained in critical condition Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital, according to nursing supervisor Penny Funk.

The white, two-story duplex where the shooting occurred was about a block from downtown Crandon, a small town located 225 miles north of Milwaukee in an area known for logging and outdoor activities. The victims had gathered for what Dennee described as "a pizza and movie party."

David Franz's wife, Marci, said she was awakened by the gunshots.

"I heard probably five or six shots, a short pause and then five or six more," she said. "I wasn't sure if it was gunfire initially. I thought some kids were messing around and hitting a nearby metal building."

Then she heard eight louder shots and tires squealing, she said.

"I was just about to get up and call it in, and I heard sirens," she said. "There's never been a tragedy like this here. There's been individual incidents, but nothing of this magnitude."

Three of the victims were Crandon High School students, said school Superintendent Richard Peters, and the other three had graduated within the past three years.

"There is probably nobody in Crandon who is not affected by this," Peters said, adding that students "are going to wake up in shock and disbelief and a lot of pain."

Peters did not know whether Peterson had graduated from the 300-student school. But Crandon resident Karly Johnson, 16, said that she knew the gunman and that he had helped her in a tech education class.

"He graduated with my brother," she said. "He was nice. He was an average guy. Normal. You wouldn't think he could do that."

The Crandon School District called off classes Monday.

One victim, 20-year-old Bradley Schultz, was a third-year student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who was home to visit his friends, said his aunt, Sharon Pisarek.

"We still don't have many details, but from what they've told us, there was a girl next to him and he was covering her, protecting her," she said, sobbing. "He was loved by everybody. He was everybody's son. Senseless."

The town of about 2,000 people last made headlines in August, when community groups and a soldier helped bring an Iraqi girl to the United States for a cornea transplant. The mayor pleaded Monday for support to help the town begin to heal.

"This is something we have to put back together," he said.

By JASON STRAZIUSO, Associated Press Writer Tue Sep 11, 2:17 PM ET

KABUL, Afghanistan - The main U.S. base in Afghanistan fell silent Tuesday at the moment the first hijacked jetliner struck the World Trade Center. Soldiers bowed their heads in prayer.

In the capital, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said America has made progress in Afghanistan against al-Qaida and the Taliban, even though violence in the country is soaring and Osama bin Laden is still at large six years after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"I think our best assessment is that he is still alive and that he is somewhere in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border area," Negroponte said. "I would also make the point that wherever he is, he is hiding."

Insurgent violence is at its highest level in Afghanistan since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion that followed the 9/11 attacks, exposing the weaknesses of the central government and straining the multinational forces supporting it. More than 4,200 people, mostly militants, have died this year in violence related to the insurgency, according to an Associated Press tally based on figures from Afghan and Western officials.

"Defeating an insurgency increasingly fueled by the narcotics trade is a painstaking process, but progress is being made and we will not abandon the people of Afghanistan to the likes of the Taliban and al-Qaida," Negroponte said several hours after a ceremony at the U.S. Embassy flagpole, where rubble from the Sept. 11 attacks is buried. "We can measure the progress we've made here since then and look ahead with optimism to the future."

President Hamid Karzai told reporters that he lamented the thousands of people killed in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, but the attacks helped refocus attention on Afghanistan. He thanked the international community for helping to "return Afghanistan to the people of Afghanistan."

In Australia, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper urged parliament not to abandon Afghanistan.

"As 9/11 showed, if we abandon our fellow human beings to lives of poverty, brutality and ignorance in today's global village, their misery will eventually and inevitably become our own," Harper told a joint sitting of the House of Representatives and Senate.

In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters at his official residence that the Japanese navy should keep providing fuel for coalition warships in the Indian Ocean.

It has been doing so since November 2001 under an anti-terrorism law that has been extended three times but expires in November. The law is a key issue in a special parliament session that opened Monday.

"The international community is united in its fight against terrorism, and it is imperative that Japan continue its contributions," Abe said. "We must debate how to make such an extension possible."

At the U.S. air base near Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, servicemen and women laid flowers at a memorial stone dedicated to Peter Ganci, the New York fire chief who died while rescuing people after the Sept. 11 attacks. The base supports U.S.-led operations in Afghanistan.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said his country "sincerely shares the grief felt by the American people on this day of mourning — perhaps like no other country." In remarks carried by Russian news agencies, he noted that Russia has also been a target and "knows the horrors of terrorism first hand."

And in Turkey, authorities said police thwarted a major bomb attack when sniffer dogs led them to a minibus packed with explosives.

"A possible disaster has been prevented," Gov. Kemal Onal told reporters at the Ankara parking garage where the van was found and the explosives were defused.

In a letter to President Bush, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the "entire world remembers today the horrifying attack that hit America and plunged it into mourning on Sept. 11, 2001."

"The immense emotion and indignation that gripped the American people in the aftermath of these barbarous actions were felt throughout the entire world," Sarkozy wrote. He added that France supported the U.S. in its fight against terrorism.

By TRISHA THOMAS and COLLEEN BARRY, Associated Press Writer 45 minutes ago

MODENA, Italy - Admirers massed by the hundreds in Modena's main piazza Thursday night to pay their final respects to Luciano Pavarotti, the tenor cherished by many as "the last, great voice" of Italian opera.

The crowd applauded as pallbearers carried the white casket into the cathdral, where a funeral Saturday will draw dignitaries from opera, politics and culture. The tenor died early Thursday in his hometown at age 71 after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer.

While Pavarotti moved the world with a wonderous voice, his legacy went beyond the opera house. The tenor collaborated with classical singers and pop icons alike to bring opera to the masses, rescuing the art from highbrow obscurity in the process.

In many ways, Pavarotti fulfilled the public's imagination of what an opera star should be. He often wore a colorful scarf and a hat, be it a fedora or a beret, and while he didn't always have a beard, it was hard to imagine him without it. His heft — as well as a restaurant on his property in Modena — underlined his gourmet appetite.

But above all, his crystal clear voice, prized for its diction, made him the most celebrated tenor since Caruso. "Pavarotti was the last great Italian voice able to move the world," said Bruno Cagli, president of the Santa Cecilia National Academy in Rome.

On the Piazza Grande, hundreds of people gathered for the first evening of public viewing. Police on horseback stood at attention as mourners shuffled up the steps into the cathedral to view Pavarotti, dressed in his trademark white tie and tails, a white handkerchief and white rosary clutched in his hands.

His wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, stood off to the side of the casket, chatting calmly with well-wishers.

The atmosphere wasn't sad or tearful but warm, as Modena residents celebrated their native son, many bringing their children to see what they said was an unforgettable moment for the city and world.

Simone Sarrau, 32, waited in line until nearly midnight to pay his respects.

"He's a symbol. He's a symbol of Modena, a symbol of Italy, he's international," Sarrau said. "I think this demonstration of affection is justified, and it's not just Modena its in the whole world. He's a one-of-a-kind. There's only him, and there will always only be him."

Mayor Giorgia Pighi said the singer had been a beacon for the city.

"Thanks to Luciano Pavarotti, the name of Modena has gone around the world as the name of a city much bigger than it actually is," Pighi told Associated Press Television News before the casket arrived.

The viewing was scheduled to end at midnight and then resume Friday at 6 a.m. and last, but for a few hours of closure overnight, until shortly before the funeral.

Authorities planned for a massive outpouring of grief: Giant television screens were to be set up near the cathedral where Italian Premier Romano Prodi, among others, would pay their final respects.
Its great being smart and everything, but the best part of going to college (at least for me) was the drinking and partying that went along with it. This girl wont be legal enough to do a damn thing, which is such a waste.
By KATHY MATHESON, Associated Press Writer Sun Sep 2, 3:34 PM ET

PHILADELPHIA - Brittney Exline is too young to vote, drive a car or go to an R-rated movie, but at the age of just 15 she is beginning her Ivy League career Wednesday when classes start at the University of Pennsylvania.

She said she doesn't really notice the age gap between herself and her 17- and 18-year-old peers — and neither do they.

"I didn't tell people right off the bat that I was 15," Exline said. "A lot of people were pretty surprised."

Exline grew up in Colorado Springs, Colo., where at 8 years she was already in sixth grade. By 13 she had finished high school math. She turned 15 in February and graduated a few months later.

She's not preoccupied with how unique her accomplishments are.

"I wouldn't even really realize that if people didn't tell me," she said.

She excels at math and science and is really interested in politics, so she enrolled in a Penn program that will award her degrees from both the engineering and liberal arts schools when she graduates in 2011.

But her resume also includes years of dancing and singing and a couple of teen pageant titles.

"Her motivation, discipline and maturity provided clear evidence that, despite her age, she was ready to travel halfway across the country and thrive in Penn's rigorous academic environment," Eric Kaplan, interim dean of admissions, said in a statement.

There have been much younger college students: Jessica Meeker enrolled at Penn State two months before her 13th birthday, graduating in 2004 at age 16.

Exline's mother, Chyrese, a geriatric supervisor, said her concerns about her daughter's freshman year are probably no different from any other parent's.

"We did our best to prepare her," Chyrese Exline said.

Exline has already been on the Philadelphia campus for about a month, participating in a pre-freshman acclimation program. Program counselor Noemi Maldonado described her as "extremely outgoing, very social, very friendly, very mature for her age."

Miguel Gonzalez, another program participant, said Exline revealed her age when a group of incoming freshmen were hanging out late one night.

"She's really cool for a 15-year-old," said Gonzalez, who turns 18 later this month. "We were surprised, but I don't think it's too shocking."
Even if you're not a fan of baseball, you should still be able to appreciate this! Wow, 30 runs!!! Some teams dont score that many runs in 10 games let alone 1!! Truly amazing.
